WHEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY ROOF?

While a roof is designed to last for a long time, there may come a time when you need to work with a roofing contractor to get the whole thing replaced. With proper maintenance and some work on the roof throughout the years, you can prolong the life and keep it around for longer. However, all roofs reach the end of their lifespan at some point and you may need to consider when it is time for something new.

As a homeowner, you need to pay close attention to the roof of your home to ensure it gets the care and attention it deserves. Some of the signs that you should look for to determine if the roof should be replaced or not include:

·         You look at the shingle edges and you notice that they are curled or cupped

·         There are bald spots on the shingles and the granules, or the rough spots, are missing.

·         Many of the shingles are getting cracked and look worn down.

·         The roof is twenty years old or more. While the shingles produced today are durable and strong, they will wear out at some point. Once the roof reaches 20 years old, it is time to work with a roofing contractor to get an updated roof.

·         The roof looks old and worn. Your roof can look amazing for many years, but it is not designed to last forever. Once it starts to look old and worn, it is time to replace it.

·         Others in the neighborhood are getting new roofs. Most of the homes in your neighborhood are going to be built around the same time. This means they will need a new roof at similar times as well. If you notice many of your neighbors are getting new roofs, then it is a sign that your roof is getting old too and needs replaced.

·         Dark streaks: It is possible that airborne algae could cause dark streaks on the top of the roof. If the shingles are old when you start to notice this, then it is time to replace it.

·         Moss: Moss is going to grow on the surface of the roof, especially in areas that do not tend to get a lot of sunlight. This is mostly a cosmetic issue but may be a sign that something more is wrong with the roof as well.

When you suspect that your roof is getting older and needs some work done on it, then it is time to call in the professionals to help take care of it for you. With so many great roofing materials to choose from and some great roofing contractors, you can get the roof replaced and looking great in no time, helping to protect your home for years to come.
